At any level of basketball, it's difficult to attain perfection in league play.

The Carbon High girls basketball team found that out in heartbreaking fashion falling to Juab 51-47 in overtime on Thursday night at the CHS gymnasium.

What looked like another opportunity for the Lady Dinos to seperate themselves from the rest of the pack in Region 12 play was changed in a matter of just eight minutes. Juab mounted a huge fourth quarter comeback to help send the game into overtime. In overtime they took to the free throw line and converted the opportunities on their way to giving Carbon their first blemish of the region season and ending their eight game winning streak.

"Hopefully this game serves as a wake up call for us," said Carbon High head coach Ted Bianco after the game.

Through much of the first three quarters, Carbon controlled the game through the use of their signature pressure defense and a number of timely baskets to gain a lead of 24-11 heading into halftime.

But, as it has been the case over the past few games, the Lady Dinos came out flat to start the second half. Despite keeping up their pressure on defense, the Carbon offense began to sputter. The team began to accumulate turnovers and were unable to convert on some baskets down low in the paint.

Carbon took a 10 point lead into the fourth quarter when Juab began to make their move. With each made shot and defensive stop, the Lady Wasps gained a noticeable confidence that spread like a wildfire through the players and coaching staff.

Juab cut the lead to 37-33 with 2:23 left and were helped by the Lady Dinos making just 50 percent of their free throws down the stretch.

Down by two with 10.7 seconds left, Juab gave the ball to Kobe Farrer who calmly snuck in behind Carbon players in the paint and hit a turn around jumper that bounced around the rim before falling in to tie the game at 40-40. Carbon's Miranda Averett missed a running jumper that bounced off the backboard sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, the two teams traded baskets and chances at the free throw line. Juab took a 46-45 lead which they would never relinquish.

Carbon's luck would not get any better down the stretch as Rachel Scoggins, one of the team's three point shooters, saw two of her attempts bounce out of the basket and Lexi Gagon missed a close layup in the final moments.

Juab (11-7, 6-2 Region 12) was able to convert from the foul line down the stretch (16-of-27, 59.3 percent) compared to Carbon (12-of-27, 44.4 percent).

"We need to take care of business at the free throw line," Bianco said noting the importance of those missed points down the stretch.

Despite the loss, Carbon still maintains their one game lead over Delta and Juab heaing into the final two region games this week.

Bianco said the team will need to gain their confidence back after letting miscues get the best of the team.

"Our defense broke down late in the second half and we started to play really tight," he explained. "We couldn't get shots to fall and we just seemed to lose our edge defensively."

Kelcy Otani led Carbon with 12 points. Averett added 11 points as Regan Powell and Amanda Freestone each finished with seven points.

Carbon (14-4, 7-1) will look to rebound as they head to North Sanpete for a road game tonight at 5:15 p.m. They will finish the season at home on Thursday against Delta in what could be the game that decides the Region 12 champion.

Bianco said he is confident that the team will overcome a tough performance to finish the season strong.

"We'll bounce back," he said.
